Catching Moola: How to Save Money on College Textbooks?

March 19th, 2010

Remember the quote from South Park? “There’s a time and a place for everything — it’s called college.”  Ah, the days when you have the freedom to do anything you want.  Except there is one problem–the lack of something you desperately need–money.

Money is like water gradually slipping between your fingers.  Well, avoid having to stint yourself, budget your school supplies and books.  As you probably have learned, one of your most depleting expenses is buying textbooks.  A college student may spend between 900 to a few thousand dollars on textbooks per year.  On top of that, it is disappointing that selling books back to the bookstore at the end of the semester will only yield you 10 to 20 percent of what you had originally paid.

But there is a way out!  You can save money on your textbooks and use that extra cash for something you will enjoy (Starbucks, food, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, clothes, Coldplay tickets, etc.). So here are your awaited instructions to a more munificent college life:

1. Get a list of your college books titles and/or ISBN numbers.

2.  Find the best and cheapest prices by visiting LandOBooks.com, an easy-to-use price comparison tool for textbooks and books.

3.  Select the best priced books and purchase.

4.  Don’t forget to calculate how many $$$ you saved!

5.  Happily wait for your book(s) to come in the mail.

6. Tell your friends about LandOBooks.com, and make them buy you lunch with the money you saved them.

ISBN Numbers

February 13th, 2010

ISBN numbers are 10 or 13 digit numbers that are used to uniquely identify a book.  ISBN stands for International Standard Book Number.  They are based on an older 9 digit code called the Standard Book Numbering code (SBN).  When searching for the book or textbook prices on LandOBooks.com, type the ISBN into the search bar to find the exact book you are looking for.  Here are some tips and info about ISBN numbers:

How Do I Find It?

The ISBN is often located on the back of the book, next to the barcode.  It is also sometimes found on the inside book sleeve.  It will commonly be labeled “ISBN” or “ISBN 13.”  Both are valid ISBNs that refer to the same book.  See this example:

The ISBN number is circled. This is a 13-digit isbn.

10 vs 13 Digit

10-digit ISBN numbers are the older of two formats.  The ten digit number consists of 9 identifiying digits, and one check digit.  The check digit is calculated using the first nine digits and is used to “check” or verify that the ISBN was entered correctly.  Technically, you just need the first 9 digits of an ISBN10 to identify the book, but the 10th digit lets you know that you typed the first 9 correctly.

13-digit ISBN numbers are more recent, and were created because the space of ten digit ISBNs is running out.  The isbn13 consists of 12 identifying digits and one check digit.  Interestingly, the ISBN13 format is related to its older 10-digit counterpart.  Every 10-digit ISBN can be converted to a 13-digit ISBN.  All 13-digit ISBNs beginning with the three numbers 978 are actually just 10-digit ISBNs converted to the ISBN13 format.  This means that every book with an ISBN10 will also have an ISBN13.  It is not, however, the case that every ISBN13 can be converted back into an ISBN10.  ISBN13 numbers that begin with numbers other than 978 are purely ISBN13, and are most likely very recent, published after 2007 when ISBN13s came into issue.

An example of the difference between ISBN10 and ISBN13:

The ISBN10 and ISBN13 are above the barcode.

In summary, the ISBN is a fast and simple way to search for a book.  It uniquely identifies the edition, binding and title of the book.  LandOBooks.com’s Book Price Search will find your book by both ISBN10 and ISBN13, so you don’t have to convert!
